Mt. Rushmore Road Reconstruction Project Update
Project #NH 0016(79)68, PCN 027C
Pennington County

RAPID CITY, SD – Thursday, November 3, 2016 – Work continues on Mt. Rushmore Road and the adjacent side streets. On the west side of Mt Rushmore Road minor work items remain including sodding, pavement marking and miscellaneous cleanup.

On the east side of Mt. Rushmore Road, water, sanitary sewer and storm sewer installation is complete. Surfacing work continues from Columbus Street to Saint James Street. The Clark Street intersection is closed for surfacing and the Fairview Street and Saint James Street intersections will be closed late this week while mainline paving is completed. On street parking, will be allowed within those blocks east of the construction limits. Business and residential access on Fairview Street and Saint James Street will be from Saint Cloud Street.

Beginning early next week, the outside lanes of Mt. Rushmore Road will be closed from Cathedral Drive to Cleveland Street to accommodate the installation of a monument sign in the center median. This work is anticipated to take three weeks.

The project is approximately 75% complete.

Business access on Mt. Rushmore Road will remain open at all times. A “Temporary Pedestrian Access Route” will be maintained through the project limits. Pedestrians are guided through the project on the new sidewalk from Kansas City Street to Saint James Street. There are pedestrian crossings available at Quincy Street, Columbus Street, and Saint James Street. These crossings may be temporarily removed to allow for installation of water mains and grading.

Motorists are asked to slow down through the work zone and be prepared for: suddenly slowing, merging and stopped traffic, minor delays, loose gravel, uneven surfaces and bumps, as well as construction workers and equipment adjacent to the roadway.
