Mount Rushmore Road Reconstruction Traffic Change Update

RAPID CITY, S.D. – A shift in traffic on Mount Rushmore Road, between Flormann Street and Saint James Street, is scheduled for Wednesday, March 8. Crews will begin setting up traffic control on Monday, March 6. On Wednesday, the southbound lanes of Mount Rushmore Road will be closed, on-street parking will be removed and two-way traffic will be placed in the northbound lanes. Work in the southbound lanes will include the installation of new water and sewer mains and service lines, new storm drain, grading, curb and gutter, PCC paving and lighting.

Beginning Wednesday, March 8, Saint Anne Street from Mount Rushmore Road to the west 160-feet, including the alley, and Saint Francis Street from Mount Rushmore Road to the west 140-feet, up to the alley, will be closed for approximately four weeks for the installation of water crossings and storm sewer. After that there will be intermittent closures of the two streets through the end of April for grading and gravel, curb and gutter, paving and lighting.

Weekly public meetings will resume for the Mount Rushmore Road Reconstruction project (from Saint James Street to Flormann Street) on Thursday, March 9. The meetings will be held each Thursday at 8 a.m. at The Rushmore Hotel.

Business access on Mount Rushmore Road will remain open at all times. A “Temporary Pedestrian Access Route” will be maintained on the east side of Mount Rushmore Road. Left-hand turns across traffic are discouraged to allow for continued flow of traffic.

Motorists are also advised the northbound lanes from Saint James Street to Kansas City Street will be reduced to one lane beginning the week of March 6. The following week southbound lanes will also be reduced to one lane. Pedestrian access between Clark and South streets on the east side of Mount Rushmore Road will remain closed until sidewalk and handrail installation is completed. Temporary Pedestrian Access Routes will be maintained at Fairview and South streets. Work in the area includes medians, pavement markings, retaining walls and landscaping, with an anticipated completion date of May 2017.

Weekly public meetings will resume for the Mount Rushmore Road Reconstruction project (from Flormann Street to Saint James Street) on Wednesday, March 15. The meetings will be held each Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. at The Rushmore Hotel.

Motorists are asked to slow down through the work zone and be prepared for: suddenly slowing, merging and stopped traffic, minor delays, loose gravel, uneven surfaces and bumps, as well as construction workers and equipment adjacent to the roadway.
