Mt. Rushmore Road Update 2017/03/22 027C 049F

RAPID CITY, SD – Wednesday, March 22 – Work on storm sewer continues in the Saint Anne Street to Saint Patrick Street section of Mount Rushmore Road and in Saint Francis Street from Mount Rushmore Road to the west 140-feet, up to the alley. Saint Anne Street from Mount Rushmore Road to the west 160-feet, including the alley, is tentatively scheduled to be closed March 28 through the end of April for work on storm sewer, grading and gravel, curb and gutter, paving and lighting. The closures of Saint Francis and Saint Anne streets may be intermittent during this time.

Removals on Mount Rushmore Road are complete from Saint James Street through Saint Cloud Street and are moving south. Removals through Franklin Street and the alley south of Franklin Street are tentatively scheduled for the week of April 3rd. Work on sanitary sewer has begun in Mount Rushmore Road at Saint James Street, moving south. Saint Cloud Street, from Mount Rushmore Road to the west approximately 180-feet, is tentatively scheduled to be closed for approximately one week, starting March 25, for work on sanitary sewer and water. There will be intermittent closures of Saint Cloud Street, following the work on sanitary sewer and water, for grading and gravel, curb and gutter, paving and lighting.

Business access on Mount Rushmore Road will remain open at all times. A “Temporary Pedestrian Access Route” will be maintained on the east side of Mt. Rushmore Road through the first phase of construction. Left-hand turns across traffic are discouraged to allow for continued flow of traffic.

Work continues on medians, pavement markings, retaining walls and landscaping from Kansas City Street to Saint James Street. North and south bound lanes have been reduced to one lane. The traffic control shift on the northbound lanes has been postponed to next week, due to weather. Northbound traffic will be shifted to the outside lane. Pedestrian access between Clark and South streets on the east side of Mount Rushmore Road will remain closed until sidewalk and handrail installation is completed. Temporary Pedestrian Access Routes will be maintained at Fairview and South streets. The anticipated completion date of work on the project between Kansas City and Saint James streets is May 2017.

Motorists are asked to slow down through the work zone and be prepared for: suddenly slowing, merging and stopped traffic, minor delays, loose gravel, uneven surfaces and bumps, as well as construction workers and equipment adjacent to the roadway.

Weekly progress meetings at The Rushmore Hotel are held every Wednesday at 8 a.m. for the project between Saint James and Flormann streets, and every Wednesday at 9 a.m. for the project between Kansas City and Saint James streets.
